Right after WordPress installation, you must have noticed that there is a category called “uncategorized”. You might have created many categories for segregating posts and you might want to delete the “uncategorized” category. This guide will teach you how to delete or remove uncategorized categories from WordPress.

Steps to delete uncategorized category from WordPress

Step 1 – Create a New Category

  1. Go to Click on “Posts” then click on “Categories“
  2. Under “Add New Category”, Enter “Name” and “Slug” of the new category that you want to create
  3. Click on “Add New Category“

Step 2 – Change Default Category

  1. Click on “Settings” then click on “Writing“
  2. Beside ” Default Post Category“, click the drop-down and select the new category you have created in the steps above
  3. Click on “Save Changes“

Step 3 – Delete the Uncategorized category

  1. Click on “Posts” then click on “Categories“
  2. Hover your cursor over the “Uncategorized” category” and click “Delete“
  3. Click “OK” in the box

It’s done, you have successfully deleted the “Uncategorized” category from WordPress.
